In Early Days
Shri Madhav Hegde, whom Bhagavan addressed as Engineer Hegde, remembered him as a young boy often found on the platform of Mangalore Railway Station. He often wore a half shirt then. Few G S B community members who had become his devotees, used to sit to listen to this young boy. Although some of them were older to Him, they revered Him.
Then there was a very short time when He was found wearing a Kafni. It was at that moment someone took Him to a studio and took His Picture. There is another picture of Him in Kafni holding on His lap Mrs. Krishnabai’s son. I had met Krishnabai’s son when he was quite old. He was Mr. Mangalorie, living then in Talmikiwadi, Girgaon, Mumbai.
Once, in the 1940s, just before the Independence of India, one day Bhagavan demanded that my father take Him to a tailor and get a three-piece suit sewn for Him. My father did as per His bidding. When the suit was ready my father gave it to Him to wear. Bhagavan wore it and took my father circa walk around South Mumbai. After a few hours, Bhagavan undressed threw the suit, and went back to His preferred dress, loincloth, and a blanket over His shoulder. In those days such a dress did not draw much attention. Bhagavan and my father, Raghunath Shenoy have often moved all over Mumbai and its outskirts, right up to Kalyan on the train. There must have been other devotees who must have also got this honor to accompany Him in Mumbai.
By large, a loincloth and a thick blanket was His common dress. He kept only langoti till His last. During His Samadhi, everything was arranged except for His Langoti. It was Ratnakar Shenoy who could offer this important Seva, which became His last Langoti. Ratnakar used to make offerings of Langoti whenever he visited Him. This time too He had carried one pair! That became the last pair, with which He was placed in Samadhi!
