Sadguru Sthavan

The Path of Guru Krupa Yog as Revealed by Shree Tulas Amma

Throughout the spiritual history surrounding Bhagavan Nityananda, many devotees experienced profound transformation through His silent grace. Among them, one name stands out for the depth of her inner experience and the spiritual guidance she left for future generations—Tulas Amma.

Through her life and writings, Tulas Amma revealed a path that harmoniously integrates devotion, knowledge, and yogic discipline. Her compositions are not merely devotional hymns; they form a subtle spiritual guide for seekers walking the path of Guru Krupa Yog—the path of transformation through the grace of the Sadguru.

Her work stands as a bridge between the lofty truths of Advaita and the tender simplicity of Bhakti, offering guidance that is accessible to seekers of every temperament.

The Awakening Through the Guru’s Gaze

Tulas Amma’s spiritual life was transformed through a direct blessing from Bhagavan Nityananda. She received Netra Dīkṣā—initiation through the Guru’s divine gaze. Such initiation is considered one of the most subtle and powerful transmissions in the yogic tradition.

Through this awakening, the inner vision of Rāj Yog unfolded within her. The path of meditation, prāṇāyāma, and the awakening of kuṇḍalinī-śakti became her natural mode of spiritual practice.

Her personal sādhana was therefore inward, silent, and deeply contemplative.

Yet what made Tulas Amma exceptional was her compassion and spiritual maturity. She understood that while some seekers are drawn to the disciplines of meditation and yogic practice, many others approach the Divine through the path of devotion.

Some seek through contemplation.
Some seek through knowledge.
But many find their way through love for the Guru.

Recognising this diversity of spiritual temperaments, she composed hymns and bhajans that could awaken devotion in the heart of any seeker.

These compositions were gathered under the title Sadguru Sthavan, while the heart of her devotional expression received the beautiful name Ātmaspuraṇ.

Ātmaspuraṇ – The Spontaneous Outpouring of the Soul

The word Ātmaspuraṇ means the spontaneous pulsation or radiance of the Soul.

The compositions contained in this work were not the result of intellectual effort or poetic craftsmanship. They arose naturally from the depths of spiritual experience—from what the sages call the hṛdaya-guhā, the cave of the heart.

Because they originate from that sacred space within, they possess a rare spiritual vitality.

Indeed, Bhagavan Nityananda Himself encouraged devotees to sing Tulas Amma’s bhajans, remarking that they had sprung directly from her heart.

When sung with sincerity, these hymns awaken the very spiritual states from which they were born:

  • Bhakti – devotion
  • Bhāva – sacred emotion
  • Prema – divine love
  • Śaraṇāgati – surrender

Thus the singing of these bhajans becomes a form of spiritual practice in itself.

Ātmaspuraṇ also includes compositions by several of her disciples whose inner lives were transformed in her presence. In this way, the work reflects not only her personal realisation but also the spiritual flowering of the community around her.

A Spiritual Map Hidden Within Devotion

While Sadguru Sthavan appears at first to be a collection of devotional hymns, a deeper study reveals a carefully structured spiritual progression.

Tulas Amma gently guides the aspirant through every stage of the inner journey—from the earliest expressions of devotion to the ultimate realisation of the Self.

Significantly, she begins the work not with ritual or prayer, but with the highest spiritual truth.

The Aṣṭaka – The Vision of the Formless Guru

Sadguru Sthavan opens with an Aṣṭaka, a garland of eight ślokas describing the Parabrahma-svarūpa of Bhagavan Nityananda.

In these verses she declares:

Nityānanda rūpam | Guru-svarūpam | Ātma-svarūpam
Akhaṇḍa rūpam | Ādhāra rūpam | Ānanda rūpam | Śaraṇam prapadye

Through these luminous lines she reveals a profound truth:

  • the form of Nityananda
  • the essence of the Guru
  • and the nature of the Self

are not separate realities.

They are one indivisible, blissful, formless Consciousness.

By placing this teaching at the very beginning of the book, she silently reminds the seeker of the ultimate destination of the spiritual journey—the realisation of the Nirguṇa Brahman, the Formless Guru.

Yet she also understands that most seekers begin their journey with form.

And so, with the gentleness of a compassionate guide, she leads the aspirant step by step along the path.

From Form to Formlessness

Sadguru Sthavan unfolds through several thoughtfully arranged sections, each nurturing a different stage of the seeker’s growth.

The progression is natural and deeply compassionate, guiding the aspirant from outward devotion toward inner realisation.

Pūjan and Ārti – The Foundation of Devotion

The journey begins with simple acts of worship.

Lighting a lamp.
Offering flowers.
Singing ārti.
Chanting the name of the Guru.

Such acts may appear simple, yet they have a profound effect. They steady the mind, soften the heart, and create an atmosphere of reverence.

Through these outward expressions, the seeker begins to cultivate an inner relationship with the Guru.

In this way, form becomes the doorway to the Formless.

Sadguru Stuti – Contemplation of the Guru

The next stage deepens devotion through praise of the Guru.

These hymns invite the seeker to contemplate the Guru’s compassion, wisdom, protection, and divine presence.

As the mind repeatedly reflects upon these qualities, it gradually becomes purified and begins to mirror the very nature of the Guru.

Devotion deepens, and remembrance becomes constant.

Sādhanā – The Heart of Guru Krupa Yog

At the centre of Sadguru Sthavan lies a series of seventy-two hymns devoted to sādhanā, the inner practice guided by the Guru’s grace.

Here Tulas Amma describes the subtle process of inner transformation.

She speaks of:

  • purification of the mind
  • surrender to the Guru
  • the silent working of grace
  • the dissolution of doubts
  • the arising of inner peace
  • and the gradual awakening of Self-awareness.

Through poetic expression she presents a living map of spiritual evolution, showing how the seeker moves from effort toward effortless awareness.

Sadguru Krupa Svanubhava – Mystical Experiences of Grace

In this section Tulas Amma shares glimpses of her own mystical experiences of Bhagavan’s grace.

These include inner visions, revelations, and states of deep absorption.

Such passages are not meant to glorify personal experiences, but to reveal the living reality of the Guru’s transforming presence.

They serve as inspiration for seekers who walk the path with faith.

The Transformation of Her Disciples

In the concluding section she records the transformations witnessed in those who lived and practised in her presence.

Devotees experienced:

  • clarity of mind
  • deepening devotion
  • inner light and peace
  • awakening spiritual awareness.

These accounts stand as living testimony that the path she describes is not theoretical—it transforms those who walk it.

A Complete Guide to Guru Krupa Yog

Seen as a whole, Sadguru Sthavan reveals itself as a complete spiritual roadmap.

The journey unfolds through successive stages:

  • Ritual – grounding the mind
  • Devotion – opening the heart
  • Sādhanā – purifying the inner being
  • Experience – confirming the path
  • Realisation – merging with the Formless Guru

Thus Ātmaspuraṇ becomes far more than a collection of devotional songs. It becomes a practical guide for seekers walking the path of Guru Krupa Yog.

The Living Power of Her Bhajans

The beauty of Tulas Amma’s work lies in its authenticity.

Her bhajans are not literary creations. They are the fragrance of her inner spiritual state.

When a devotee sings these hymns, they are not merely reciting words. They are entering the spiritual vibration from which these verses emerged.

For this reason, Bhagavan Nityananda encouraged devotees to sing them, knowing that they carry spiritual power and awakening.

A Testament to the Grace of the Guru

The life of Tulas Amma stands as a shining example of the transforming power of Guru Krupa.

Through the grace of Bhagavan Nityananda:

a sincere seeker was awakened,
her inner realisations blossomed into spiritual guidance,
and her devotional outpourings became a path for future generations.

Sadguru Sthavan therefore remains a timeless offering—a journey that begins with devotion to the Guru and culminates in the realisation of the Formless Absolute.

In its verses we see the silent working of grace:
grace that flowed from Bhagavan Nityananda,
grace that uplifted Tulas Amma,
and grace that continues to guide seekers even today.
