Shree Shaligram Swami’s Birthdate*

In the sacred village of Mahul, where spiritual vibrations were palpable, the birthday of Bhagavan Nityananda is celebrated on 30th November with immense devotion and grandeur. It was through the deep spiritual intuition of Shree Shaligram Swami that this date came to be recognised as the appearance day of Bhagavan. Interestingly, this date also coincides with the appearance day of Shree Mahavatar Babaji, drawing an unseen yet profound spiritual connection among great beings beyond time and space.

Shree Shaligram Swami heldin Mahul the first birthday celebration. In those days, Bhagavan Nityananda’s Jayanti (birthday celebration) was observed in Mahul with great fervour. Nearly 28 bags of rice were cooked to serve the throngs of devotees who gathered for darshan and mahaprasad. Inspired by the divine energy and the overwhelming devotion of these gatherings, the disciples of Shree Shaligram Swami began to feel that Swamiji’s birthday too must be celebrated in a similarly grand manner.

When the devotees humbly expressed this desire to Swamiji, he did not respond directly. Instead, he gently guided them to seek the permission of Bhagavan Nityananda himself. Obediently, the devotees approached Bhagavan Nityananda, who, with a subtle nod of consent, granted his blessings for the celebration of Shaligram Swami’s birthday. This divine sanction filled the hearts of the devotees with great joy — but now arose a new question:
When exactly was Shree Shaligram Swami born?

The Divine Play of Revelation

Among Swamiji’s closest devotees was Shree Keshav Apte, reverentially known as Appa Apte, a direct disciple of both Bhagavan Nityananda and Shaligram Swami. Appa had an intimate spiritual rapport with Swamiji, often engaging in silent inner communication to understand his unspoken will. It was through this subtle communion that the mystery of Swamiji’s birthday began to unfold — in a deeply mystical and symbolic manner.

One day, it happened to be Appa’s brother-in-law’s birthday. Appa advised his sister that both of them should prepare a sweet dish made of chickpea flour (a traditional birthday preparation) and offer it to Shaligram Swami. When they arrived and offered the dish, they told Swamiji, “Today is his birthday.” Swamiji, with a gentle smile, replied:
“Oh! My birthday also falls in this month.”
Thus, the month of Shravan was revealed.

The Unfolding of the Date

In the following year, Appa was determined to know the exact tithi (date) of Swamiji’s birth. He requested his brother Chintamani to go to Ganeshpuri and remain in the company of Shaligram Swami throughout the month of Shravan, particularly during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase). Chintamani followed instructions faithfully and arrived at Ganeshpuri on Shravan Pratipada (first lunar day).

On the eighth day – Shravan Shudha Ashtami, something unusual occurred. In the early hours of the morning, Swamiji himself woke Chintamani and lovingly prepared Uttapa (a traditional pancake) along with chutney. He asked Chintamani to cover the preparation with a cloth and serve it to all those who came for darshan. Miraculously, though there were only 7 or 8 Uttapa initially, many people ate and were satisfied. After everyone had left, Swamiji asked:

“How many Uttapa remain?”

When Chintamani lifted the cloth, he found that only two remained. Swamiji ate one and gave the other to Chintamani. Then, with a mysterious smile, he said:

“Now go and meet Appa.”

Chintamani returned immediately to Thane and narrated the incident to Appa. Appa understood the deeper message:
Just as the month had been revealed the previous year, now the exact date — Shravan Shudha Ashtami or Durgasthami — had been divinely disclosed.

A Festival is Born

Having received this inner confirmation through divine leela (play), Appa joyously organised the first grand celebration of Swamiji’s birthday at Thane the following year. Since then, this day has been commemorated with bhakti, devotion, and deep spiritual reverence.

In 2025, the auspicious day of Shravan Shudha Ashtami falls on Friday, 1st August, which also known as Durgasthami, a day sacred to Divine Mother Durga. This coincidence adds a divine glow to the celebration, invoking both Guru Kripa and Shakti’s blessings upon all devotees.

This entire episode is not merely about calendar dates. It reflects how a true Satguru reveals himself on his own terms, and how those attuned to his inner guidance, like Appa Apte, can decode the mystical signals through faith, surrender, and subtle perception. The way Swamiji revealed his birthday — through symbolic acts, divine timing, and intuitive clues — exemplifies the subtle and playful nature of Siddhas.

Celebrating Shree Shaligram Swami’s appearance day on Shravan Shudha Ashtami is, therefore, not just a ritual observance, but an invitation to align with the Guru’s mysterious grace that transcends time.
